Hailing from Tel Aviv, Israel, the three men who form Monotonix came together less than five years ago. Displeased with the music industry in their home country, Ami Shalev, Yonatan Gat and Haggai Fershtman began to tour throughout Europe and the U.S., seeking an audience better suited for their punk sound. From the years of 2006 to 2007, the band performed 300 shows around the world, quickly becoming one of the most entertaining bands to see live. The band’s performances consist of wild behavior as it typically sets its stage within the audience. Band members set their equipment (and occasionally themselves) on fire, throw garbage cans at their audience and spend a majority of their set on top of their fans, crowd surfing. In anticipation of their Nov. 1 show at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, The State Press spoke with lead singer Ami Shalev.

It is the time. The classes have been settled into. The jobs have been found. The tiny bit of money is coming in. It is the time to take off the headphones and start seeing your favorite bands live (or at least update your iPod). But where to start? Phoenix's metropolitan area is ever so large and daunting. There are so many venues and so little time to spend researching who’s where and when. But the State Press has music fans covered this month from the big acts coming to town, to the album releases coming to record shops and online audio marketplaces.

After six studio albums, four EP’s, and two compilation albums since 1998, Saves the Day is now getting ready to release their seventh full-length album. The saying goes “you can't teach and old dog new tricks,” but in the modern music industry, many progressive mainstream artists are losing focus on the old tricks. Chicago-based band AM Taxi has been bending the rules on what rock is today. With live recordings, EP's completed in a matter of days, and melodies familiar to 1960’s classic rock, front man Adam Krier has led the rest of his boys to growing fame with not only the younger crowd, but older generations as well. The State Press sat down with Adam Krier and keyboardist Luke Schmitt after their set at Arizona Fall Frenzy on Saturday.

After a hiatus from performing after front man Brad Nowell’s death in 1996, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh have teamed up with Rome Ramirez, who has been featured in The Dirty Heads’ single “Lay Me Down,” to work on a second generation of the ’90’s band Sublime. Because of legal challenges from the late Nowell's family on usage rights for the band name, the trio is now officially titled as Sublime With Rome. The State Press spoke with bassist Wilson prior to their performance at Arizona Fall Frenzy.

A new set of musicians attracted a different demographic to Wells Fargo Arena this year at the annual ASU Fall Welcome Concert. Rather than a famous rock band, such as last year's guests Taking Back Sunday, blowing up the stage with punk angst, headliner Dierks Bentley and opener Chingy drew in cowboy hat-wearing country fans and listeners who enjoy some hip hop beats from their high school years.

After 14 years together, Dropkick Murphys are still taking the stage with their Irish punk music. They carry instruments like the accordion and bagpipe along the way. In addition to juggling family, the Massachusetts band has been through more than a decade of set and band member changes. The band’s newest live album “Live on Lansdowne, Boston MA” was released earlier this year, and an upcoming full-length album is expected in early 2011.
