Men’s hoops back in action Tuesday vs. Cornell
The ASU men’s basketball team didn’t get much of a break to celebrate coach Herb Sendek’s 100th win as a Sun Devil.
Fresh off its 97-70 win over Florida A&M Sunday, ASU has a quick turnaround to prepare for Cornell on Tuesday.
The Sun Devils (2-0) are 5-0 against Ivy League teams. This will be their first matchup against the Big Red (1-3).
It’s the Sun Devils’ second game in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational.
They’ll play four games in a week due to the tournament.
ASU rout Sunday to start the tournament was the third most points scored under Sendek. Five players were in double figures in consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 23 and Dec. 29, 2008.
Freshman point guard Jahii Carson led the way with 20 points and seven assists. Senior guard Chris Colvin contributed 15 points and six rebounds off the bench. Sophomore forward Jonathan Gilling had 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in the win.
The Big Red enter Tuesday’s contest on a three-game losing streak. Cornell was blown out by Wisconsin 73-40 Sunday. It also has a short turn around to make with both games on the road.
The Big Red shot 26.2 percent in the game. Cornell sophomore guard Devin Cherry was the only player in double-figures with 13 points. He leads the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points a game.
Similar to Florida A&M, Cornell has an undersized frontcourt. Sophomore forward Shonn Miller and senior forward Josh Figini, both listed at 6-foot-9, started against Wisconsin. The Badgers had a 54-31 rebounding edge against Cornell.
ASU will likely look to get junior center Jordan Bachynski involved early to take advantage of its size.
Tip off is at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network and 620 AM.
