The Sun Devils (10-7, 2-3 Pac-12) made only a total of only 13 field goals. Eight of them were three-pointers while they shot 17 percent from inside the arc.
The team didn't get points in the paint this game.
“We didn’t get our paint touches. We talked about what we needed to do and we proceeded to go out and not do it for 20 minutes,” said coach Charli Turner Thorne. “The last thing we wanted to do was to make one or two passes and fire up a perimeter shot, yet be did that way too much.”
ASU fell in love with the three-pointer, especially after being up four after the end of the first half.
But it went cold for the Sun Devils in the second half.
They had one six-minute stretch when they went scoreless and CU took control.
“We’re a young team trying to grow up, learn how to be tougher and more disciplined in terms of doing what you’re suppose to do even when it’s hard and they take things away,” Turner Thorne said.
A mix of Colorado defense and a lack of patience from ASU led to only eight shot attempts for the Sun Devil starting front court.
However, the interior game belonged to CU all night. Last week coach Charli Turner Thorne said rebounding was the most important aspect for the Sun Devils.
The Buffaloes bullied the Sun Devils inside.
They were outrebounded for the third game in a row. The Buffaloes (14-2, 3-2) pulled down 47 to ASU’s 31.
5'10 senior guard Chucky Jeffrey out-muscled ASU. She grabbed 16 rebounds while scoring 19 points for CU. She was voted All-Pac-12 team and Pac-12 All-Defensive team last season.
The Buffaloes also didn’t shoot very well on Friday either though. They shot 37 percent from the field. But they were able to invade into the interior and get to the stripe. CU shot 34 free throws and made 21.
The second half slowly became a disaster for ASU. In the first 10 minutes of the second half, it only managed to score six points.
Freshman forward Haley Videckis had a career-high of 11 points while going 3-5 from three-point land. She was the only Sun Devil to score in double figures and only one to shoot over 50 percent.
ASU plays Utah on Sunday. They have yet to win a game in conference this year.
“We have to be more efficient and execute better on Sunday. And we have to rebound better. We’re just not rebounding right now,” Turner Thorne said.
