Tempe Police: Shoplifting man claims 'shady people' put meth in his bag

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Thursday:

  • A 24-year-old Tempe man was arrested Jan. 1 on the 1300 block of West Elliot Road on suspicion of shoplifting and dangerous drug possession, according to a police report. The man attempted to take numerous items from Walmart and leave the store without paying for them, police reported.

Officers found a blue bag of meth in the man’s backpack. He denied owning it, according to the report.

The man said he lives with “shady people” who must have put the meth into his backpack, police reported.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, according to the report.

  • A 31-year-old Phoenix man was arrested Dec. 26 on the 1700 block of East Apache Boulevard on suspicion of theft, trafficking in stolen property and lying to law enforcement, according to a police report. The man attempted to return two struts, which he said were the wrong size for his car, without a receipt because his father bought them for him for Christmas, police reported.

However, the store manager noticed the man met the description of someone who had stolen parts from another car store in the area, according to the report.

The man gave officers an ID with one name, but he also had a different license with another name on it, police reported. The man told officers the other license belonged to his friend, but he later told officers the name on the ID was not his friend’s real name, according to the report.

The man told officers his friend had taken the struts from the car part store, but he didn’t know they were stolen, police reported.
