Each week, reporter Lindsay Roberts will take a journey to find restaurants that fit her champagne taste and beer budget.

I should start out by saying I am not a breakfast person. When my friends want to go get breakfast at Denny’s or IHOP, I protest. Bacon and eggs were never my thing. That being said, there are some breakfast places that I actually enjoy. Duza’s Kitchen is one of those places.

Hidden in the middle of the Coronado neighborhood, this quaint little restaurant is a small hideaway and the perfect place to catch up with friends or study quietly while sipping a cappuccino.

This restaurant is one of my favorites because of the great prices, relaxed atmosphere and, of course, delicious food.

One of the more unique things about this place is that it doesn’t have a menu of traditional french toast, pancakes and eggs. Its breakfast menu consists of arepas with chorizo, guacamole and fried eggs, pumpkin quinoa porridge, Parmesan toast with asparagus and prosciutto and vegetarian breakfast bowls with tofu and butternut squash.

There are two very traditional breakfast items; however, the way they are prepared are anything but traditional. Previously, I had the french toast, and it was made with an assortment of sweet tea breads, topped with mascarpone cheese and a variety of fresh fruit on top.

This time I wanted something more on the savory side. I had the crispy breakfast naan. The dish consisted of a warmed naan bread with tzatziki and hummus spread on to the bread, topped with arugula, feta cheese, lemon zest and prosciutto. I chose to top it off with two over easy eggs. The bread was soft and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The texture of the arugula paired well with the soft naan, and it was a great complement to the strong flavors of the prosciutto and lemon zest.

Luckily, it was not difficult to stay under my budget of $12. I spent $11.40, which included my breakfast naan and a cup of hot, freshly brewed coffee.

Duza’s kitchen also has a coffee bar that makes espresso drinks like cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and macchiatos. They serve teas and an assortment of house-made fruit infused waters, with combinations like strawberry, lemon and basil; kiwi and cucumber; strawberry, coconut, lime and mint; and cantaloupe, honey and mint.

The kitchen is located at 2243 N. 12th St., Phoenix and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. They serve breakfast until 11 a.m. and lunch until 2 p.m.
