ASU baseball loses series to Long Beach State

Just like Saturday, the Sun Devils struggled at the plate on Sunday.

ASU baseball experienced its first series loss of the season after falling 3-1 in Sunday's rubber match with Long Beach State. It has now lost three of its last four games.

Sophomore lefty Reagan Todd (1-1) took the loss but had another solid outing, giving up just one run on five hits before being pulled when a stolen base, throwing error and walk ended his afternoon.

Eder Erives, who was impressive in relief during the opening weekend, took over for Todd and gave up two runs on three hits and issued a pair of walks in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Long Beach State dangled a 1-0 lead for much of the afternoon. However, the Sun Devils only had three hits after mustering just four a night before, a stark difference to Friday night's 14-hit, nine-run outburst.

The group's only run came when sophomore outfielder Andrew Shaps hit an RBI single to center field.

In Saturday's loss, senior third baseman Jordan Aboites' throwing error in a one-run game led to two runs that doomed ASU. On Sunday, the Sun Devils committed two more errors.

Long Beach State left fielder Brock Lundquist drove in all three of his team's runs, two of them coming on a two-out triple.

Dirtbags shortstop Garrett Hampson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Second baseman Jarren Duran added a 2-for-4 afternoon.

Last season, ASU's first series loss of the year was to then-No. 1 TCU a week after winning an opening-weekend series over top-10 Oklahoma State. The Sun Devils did not lose a series after that until dropping two of three to Cal on May 1-3.

The club will look to bounce back while hosting Eastern Michigan for a weekend. Then, ASU will travel to Cal State Fullerton on March 8-9 for two anxiously-awaited contests with the team that defeated it in a 14-inning game at last year's Fullerton Regional.
