ASU Gymnastics welcomes Jay Santos as new head coach

The Gym Devils will hire the former head coach of Eastern Michigan

ASU announced Saturday that Jay Santos, the former gymnastics head coach at Eastern Michigan, will soon stand post as head coach of the Gym Devils.

Santos' hiring comes less than a month after news broke that Rene Lyst, the Gym Devils' then-head coach, was fired after a stint of administrative leave.

Santos' wife, Jessica Santos, will also join the team as the associate head coach.

"We have certain expectations when looking for a head coach and Jay, along with his wife, Jessica, really fits into the culture we promote within Sun Devil Athletics," ASU athletic director Ray Anderson said in a statement.

Jay and Jessica coached Eastern Michigan gymnastics to the Mid-American Conference championship this past season, breaking eight school records along the way. Jay won NCAA Central Regional Head Coach of the Year, and coached Eastern Michigan gymnast Rachel Slocum to an NCAA Championships appearance.

After graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1995, Santos went on to serve with the coaching staffs of University of Illinois-Champaign, Iowa State and Ohio State.

He is the fifth head coach in ASU gymnastics history.
