USG Council of Presidents finalizes plans for downtown campus football ticket booth

A decade following the opening of ASU's Downtown Phoenix campus, students at the campus will have their own football ticket distribution this fall, allowing them to get tickets without driving to Sun Devil Stadium.

Football tickets will be available at the U.S. Post Office, north of Civic Space Park, the same hour as Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.

However, despite the ticket booth's location, Ronald Briggs, the assistant dean of students, said the booth is for students from every campus.

"It’s not a campus-specific program," he said.

Before this change, die-hard Sun Devil Football fans would travel approximately a half hour to Sun Devil Stadium to pick up tickets before game day, while casual fans, without easy access to tickets, would stop attending football games over time.

Ryan Boyd, USGD's former vice president of policy said student government began making progress toward this campus feature last year.

"It was the number one issue in our athletics group," he said. “They just kept bringing it up in every meeting."

Current USGD President Jackson Dangremond said game days are often stressful for Downtown Phoenix students without a ticket booth.

"We didn't really feel as if this process really allows students to be engaged," Dangremond said.

He said that despite attending the nearest campus to Tempe, it was still a hassle to engage on game days due to the commute between campuses.

Shuttle rides between the Downtown Phoenix and Tempe campuses typically take up to 30 minutes. Students would then walk 15 minutes to the stadium to wait an hour or more to receive their tickets, Dangremond said.

Just weeks before the start of the 2016 fall semester, USG's Council of Presidents met with Sun Devil Athletics and discussed recent changes with ticketing procedures for the 2016 football season

Dangremond said he is relieved that the plans for the booth have been finalized.

"We're all ASU students, we're all Sun Devils, and it's important that we all show up", he said.
