No. 2 ASU women's golf earned a second place finish Tuesday in the team's first tournament of the 2016 season, and senior Monica Vaughn shot personal bests.

"I am very proud of the fight in this team and our second place finish in a strong field to start out our year," head coach Missy Farr-Kaye said to Sun Devil Athletics. "I am so happy to see Monica start her senior season so well, and also Sophia had her best finish. I look forward to what this team can accomplish together."

Vaughn shot a 67 in round one and a 66 in round two — the second and third-lowest scores ever in her career. In the second round, Vaughn birdied seven of the 18 holes.

Although Vaughn had a strong performance, the whole team contributed to a second place finish in the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, despite having their practice round cut short Sunday due to inadequate weather.

"I am very pleased with how we competed today," Farr-Kaye said on Monday to Sun Devil Athletics. "Monica posted one of her best collegiate rounds in the morning and was supported well by the entire team. I look forward to tomorrow to see what this team can accomplish together."

Vaughn finished the tournament in a tie for third place individually, and her teammate Sophia Zeeb tied for 11th place.

Zeeb also tied her career low with back-to-back scores of 70 in rounds two and three.

This tournament displays what the Sun Devils are capable of in large part because the No. 5 and No. 8 ranked amateurs in the world, freshman Olivia Mehaffey and sophomore Linnea Strom, were not at the invitational.

Mehaffey and Strom are participating in the World Amateur Team Championships for their native countries in Riviera Maya, Mexico from Sept. 14-17.

ASU women's golf will make their next start on Sept. 25 in Orlando, Florida for the the three-day Annika Intercollegiate tournament.
