ASU police will be scouring the malls on campus next week in search of transportation violations in heavy traffic areas.

“Police are in the process of observing traffic areas and deciding what areas to focus on next week,” ASU police Lt. John Sutton said.

Sutton said the rules as stated in the main campus transportation code have been in effect since last November but the police are “picking up the enforcement.”

The increased mall enforcement is to “address the issues with bicyclists, skateboarders, Rollerbladers, go-peds and mall drivers,” Sutton said.

Police will be looking for violations such as speed, right-of-way and yielding, as well as other safety issues.

In most cases, violators will be given a written warning before they are issued a citation.

Citations, Sutton said, will range in fines of $15, $30 and $60 depending on the type of violation. Police will explain the need for issuing a citation.

“Considering that the malls are multi-use, all of those different types of transportation devices have access and the ability to utilize”the malls legally, and they all have to interact safely,” Sutton said.
