The Pre-Optometry club on campus is volunteering to help senior citizens repair eyeglasses and give eye screenings.

The event, Project V.I.S.I.O.N. (Volunteers In Service Improving Ocular Needs), was created by the club's president, Richard Hunter.

The students will provide the free service at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center on Monday. They will test for peripheral vision loss and distance vision screening. Volunteers will also be making minor eyeglass repairs such as adjusting the alignment, replacing nose pads and fixing screws.

Eight students from the club are volunteering for the event. Hunter hopes to have 300 seniors attend the event.

Hunter, a biology senior, created the club in August 2001. The club holds regular meetings, has guest speakers and participates in volunteer eye-care events.

He designed the club to get resources available to residents and to bring students together with common interests in optometry. The optometry club started with about five ASU students in August and has grown to 25 students.

"Not many people know about optometry and there are not many resources for it," Hunter said, "This helps people know they aren't the only ones interested in optometry."

Cheri Peterson, academic advisor for the pre-health profession office, said the club offers preparation for optometry schooling and careers.

"The professional school wants students to be familiar with optometry," Peterson said "The club helps students get contacts and helps students prepare (for optometry).

Peterson said many students are interested in optometry, but most focus on going to medical school. Currently there is a shortage of optometrists in the field, according to Peterson.

The event will be held Monday at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center on the southwest corner of Rural Road and Southern Drive from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
