Partnership with West to ease credit transfer with Phoenix art institute

Students show interest in West campus

ASU West is signing a partnership today with the Art Institute of Phoenix that will allow Art Institute students to transfer their degree credits more conveniently to West.

Under the agreement, West will accept all 60 credits of an associate of applied science degree from the Art Institute. Students can then pursue a bachelor of applied sciences degree at West.

Before the partnership, West had to review transfer credits and decide which credits it would accept.

The transfer students can take 12 credit hours; a committee reviews the student's progress after the first semester.

Students also work closely with an adviser to ensure a successful transition, according to Cindy Rasmussen, assistant director of West's Advising Center.

The agreement was created because students have shown a substantial amount of interest in transferring to West, Rasmussen said.

"This agreement gives students another option to come to ASU West," Rasmussen said.

It also helps students get their four-year degree more quickly, according to Vincent Waldron, interim dean of division of collaborative programs.

"It allows students to combine work in the art field with another academic discipline," Waldron said.

The Art Institute of Phoenix offers degrees in animation art and design, culinary arts, graphic design and video production.

West's Bachelor of applied science degree is a flexible program designed specifically to meet the needs of students with Associate of Applied Sciience degrees. The curriculum provides broader cognitive skills relative to any working environment.
