Senior journalism major Brian Duffin talks to nationally syndicated columnist Ann Coulter after her speech against campaign finance reform at the Memorial Union Wednesday.

Staunch republican Ann Coulter spoke out against campaign finance reform at the Memorial Union on Wednesday.

Approximately 40 people attended the free ASASU-funded event. Coulter is a nationally syndicated columnist and a regular cable talk show guest.

At her speech, Coulter said she believes campaign finance reform violates freedom of speech. She criticized the media for not explaining campaign finance reform clearly.

"One thing I would advise to students is don't listen to the media when it comes to campaign finance reform," Coulter said.

She also disagreed with some of President Bush's policies, including his decision to sign the campaign finance reform law.

"(Bush) has gone too far and made too many compromises." Coulter said. "He is taking a big gamble signing for campaign finance reform."

Biology and society junior Oubai Shahbandar agreed with many of the views Coulter discussed at the speech.

"I think the exceptional point she made was Republicans represent the working class and the everyday individuals," Shahbandar said. "I also agreed with her that campaign finance reform is a threat to all our liberties."

Industrial engineering freshman Brent Tenney attended the speech and said Coulter was informative and persuasive.

"She seemed provocative and extreme in her language, but she may have been doing that to tick people off," Tenney said. "In general I agreed with her ideas."
