Steve Loy

This is the 11th in a series of articles profiling ASU's 12 Hall of Fame inductees. Up Next: Linda Vollstedt, women's golf.

When Steve Loy is inducted into the ASU Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, the feeling will likely be very familiar.

The former Sun Devil men's golf head coach was enshrined into the Eastern New Mexico Athletic Hall of Honors in 1991. A year later, he was inducted into the National Junior College Coaches Hall of Fame.

While coaching in Tempe from 1987-1992, Loy guided ASU to a pair of Pac-10 titles and its first national championship in 1990. His team also shared first-place honors at the 1991 NCAA West Regional and won four consecutive Thunderbird Invitational crowns.

Loy was credited with mentoring former Sun Devil Phil Mickelson, who emerged victorious in 16 collegiate tournaments and won three NCAA individual titles.

Loy also coached 10 Sun Devils (Mickelson, Todd Demsey, Brett Dean, Per Johansson, Jim Lemon, Scott Frisch, Jim Strickland, Billy Mayfair, Tom Stankowski and Greg Cesario) to All-America honors.

Loy garnered Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors in 1989 and 1990.

With Loy at the helm, the Sun Devils captured 26 team titles and had 25 medalists.

Before coming to ASU, Loy coached at Scottsdale Community College from 1975-1983. He also spent four years at Arkansas.
