Ten years after an outstanding collegiate career in Tempe, track and field star Maicel Malone will get a much-deserved spot in the ASU athletics Hall of Fame.
"It came as a surprise that enough people thought of me to select me for the Hall of Fame, especially at a university like Arizona State," Malone said.
During her time with the Sun Devils, Malone became the first woman to win three consecutive 400-meter NCAA indoor titles, spanning from 1990-92. She not only was a four-time NCAA champion in the 400-meter, but also was a member of a pair of NCAA championship relay teams — the 4-by-100 (1988) and the 4-by-400 (1991).
In addition to those accomplishments, Malone was an 11-time All-American, a six-time conference champion and a member of four Pac-10 championship relay teams. She was part of two school record-setting relay teams and was a member of the victorious 4-by-400-meter relay team at the 1991 World University Games. Malone also set an American indoor record by clocking in at 51.05 in the 400-meter at the 1991 NCAA Championships.
"My fondest memory at Arizona State would be setting the American indoor record, and at the same meet setting a record for the 4-by-400 relay," Malone said. "It was in my hometown of Indianapolis and all my family was there."
Perhaps even more exciting than that for Malone was when she was chosen as an alternate for the 1988 U.S Olympic team. She later captured the gold medal in the 4-by-400-meter relay at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
At the time of her induction, Malone held school records in the indoor 200-meter (23.5), the indoor 400-meter (51.05), the outdoor 200-meter (22.91) and the outdoor 400-meter (50.33). Malone was honored in 2000 at the Sun Angel Track Classic.
Malone graduated in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in communication. She currently works as an assistant coach at Florida State.
