Walter Cronkite will present his annual Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism and Mass Communication to ABC broadcaster and ASU alumnus Al Michaels.
The ceremony will be held at the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale on Thursday. Last year, Cronkite presented the award to Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward.
Michaels, a 1966 graduate of ASU, has narrated many of the most famous moments in sports for the past quarter-century, earning a News Emmy nomination for his commentary when an earthquake occurred during the 1989 World Series.
Michaels also made the famous "Do you believe in miracles?" call when the United States Olympic hockey team defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union team at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics. He has covered World Series, Super Bowl, Stanley Cup and Olympic games for ABC and has served as the play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football since 1986.
Michaels will be the guest for a question-and-answer session in Murdock Hall, Room 101 on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
Cronkite, the legendary newsman often referred to as "the most trusted man in America," will be the guest for a question-and-answer session in the Neeb Hall Auditorium on Wednesday at 8:40 a.m.
