Sun Devil Stars awarded for positive contributions

One-hundred student nominees walked out of the Memorial Union as Sun Devil Stars Wednesday night.

ASU's Office of Student Development and the ASU Leadership Development Team recognized students who have served in less conspicuous leadership roles within the community.

"Each [nominee] has made a positive contribution to the ASU community," said James Rund, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs.

What makes a Sun Devil a Star is being an undergraduate student who has made a positive contribution to the ASU community, demonstrated leadership skills and served as a role model to other students.

"These students are the backbone" of more recognized leaders, said Jan Pagoria, Clasworks director in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Created five years ago, Sun Devil Stars celebrates diversity in leadership at ASU. All students were nominated by ASU faculty or staff members.

CEO of Cold Stone Creamery and ASU graduate Doug Ducey spoke to the Sun Devil Stars about service and leadership and how the lessons he learned at ASU helped him through life.

"Leaders are made," he said.

Helping children comes natural to Sun Devil Stars nominee Francisco Heredia, a member of the Young Democrats at ASU and volunteer at the elementary school Chicanos Por la Causa.

"I feel an obligation to help my community," said Heredia, who was nominated by Pagoria.

Lindsey Arendt has been a Salvation Army volunteer for the past four years.

"It feels good to be recognized," she said. "All the hard work has paid off."
