After a 30-minute standoff Tuesday, police captured the Phoenix man they believe shot a man in a March 17 burglary.

Tempe police Sgt. Dan Masters said an anonymous tip led officers to Ryan J. Grant, 31. Officers learned that Grant was staying at the Courtyard by Marriott, located at 2621 S. 47th St. in Phoenix, just west of Tempe.

When officers arrived at the hotel around 3:20 p.m., Grant allegedly fled on a bicycle, riding north through several local businesses before dumping the bicycle and running.

Masters said Grant began to run north toward state Route 153 and under one of the freeway overpasses.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officers shut down the north side of state Route 153 at the state Route 143 interchange for less than an hour, DPS spokesman Frank Valenzuela said.

"Grant was considered armed and dangerous and wanted for attempted homicide," Masters said. "Based on his propensity for violence, we didn't want to expose any of the public in case he was armed, in case shots were exchanged."

At least 30 officers from Tempe, Phoenix and Mesa as well as a Mesa police helicopter surrounded him while hiding under the overpass.

Officers reportedly negotiated with Grant for about 30 minutes until he surrendered

Masters said that Grant admitted involvement in the shooting of Raymond Lorti during a March 17 burglary. Lorti, 59, of Tempe returned home during the burglary and was shot three times.

Tempe detectives are continuing their investigation and will be forwarding a report to the Maricopa County Attorney's office to request attempted murder charges be brought against Grant.

Grant is being held without bond for felony probation violation at the Maricopa County Jail.
