More parking to hit Tempe

Metered parallel parking spaces will be added this week along Fifth Street, from College Avenue to Ash Avenue.

The 54 new parking meters and spaces will resemble those along Mill Avenue and will cost 75 cents an hour from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, according to Rod Keeling, executive director of the Downtown Tempe Community.

Fifth Street will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes to make room for the 20-foot long spaces, Keeling said.

"This project is part of our strategy to allow for more on-street parking in downtown Tempe," he added.

The DTC shelled out about $28,000 for installations of the meters and partial re-striping, and revenue will go into the city of Tempe's general fund.

Keeling said the public would benefit the most from on-street parking.

"The public will have more places to park, and they'll be able to park closer to the places they come to visit," Keeling said.
