The ASU men's golf team started off its year in grand style, winning the 20-team Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
ASU shot a 54-hole total of 865 (282-286-297) to hold off host New Mexico, which finished at 867 (291-287-289). A late run by Ben Flam and Chez Reavie, who each recorded birdies on the final hole of the tournament, pushed the Sun Devils over the top.
Flam was ASU's top medalist, finishing in a tie for fourth after shooting 1-under par for the weekend.
Sophomore Alejandro Canizares, the 2003 NCAA champion, finished tied for eighth at even par.
The Sun Devils, currently ranked No. 5 in the country by Golf World, won their opening tournament for the first time since 1995-96, the same year they won a national championship.
Volleyball
With less than a week to go until Pac-10 play, the ASU women's volleyball team stormed through the Lone Star State to win the SMU Radisson Volleyball Classic in Dallas.
After two disappointing tournaments that netted zero titles and a losing record, the Sun Devils (5-4) were able to win all nine of their games and build momentum for a tough Pac-10 season that starts Thursday at Washington.
Senior middle blocker Mandy Stephens was named tournament MVP after recording 27 kills and committing zero errors for a .587 attack percentage in the three matches. Outside hitter Juliana Escobar also made the all-tournament team with 23 kills in the final two games after sitting out the first.
