ASU sophomore wide receiver Derek Hagan was arrested Tuesday night on charges of criminal damage after he reportedly kicked and dented his ex-girlfriend's car.

Tempe police responded to a family argument call at Hagan's residence in the 1500 block of South Beck Drive around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to police reports.

Hagan was arrested on the criminal damage charge after his ex-girlfriend reported Hagan had damaged her car during an argument, Tempe Police Spokesman Sgt. Dan Masters said.

The charge is a class-one misdemeanor and carries a penalty of up to a six-month jail sentence and/or a monetary fine.

"Because Hagan is a first-time offender, he might only be penalized with probation and mandatory anger management training," Masters said.

ASU football head coach Dirk Koetter, who was recruiting players out of town at the time of Hagan's arrest, was made aware of the incident and was gathering more information, said Mark Brand, assistant athletic director of media relations.

"Coach Koetter will take appropriate action when and if needed," Brand said.

All student athletes are governed by the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, he said, adding that any actions taken against Hagan would be mandated by the code.

According to the code, "it is the student-athlete's responsibility to report to the coach ... if he or she is involved in any type of misconduct, particularly as it relates to the law or campus policies."

Hagan recently was named to the Honorable Mention Squad of the All-Pac-10 team. He was ASU's leading receiver and ranked fifth in the Pac-10 with 1,076 receiving yards. He scored nine touchdowns during the 2003 season.

Neither Hagan nor the alleged victim could be reached for comment.
