Despite a strong performance by its divers, the ASU swimming and diving teams were unable to come away with a victory against either California or Stanford this weekend.
The divers won all but one event during separate dual meets against Stanford (No. 2 men, No. 4 women) on Friday and Cal (No. 4 men, No. 8 women) on Saturday.
Sophomore Joona Puhakka came away with victories in both 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events against the Golden Bears. Against the Cardinal, Puhakka won the 1-meter event while junior Gordon Blukis won the 3-meter, notching his first victory of the season.
"That was a pretty big upset, but it was nice to see," diving coach Mark Bradshaw said. "It's nice to know we've got someone that can step in and take the win if Joona has a bad day."
For the women, junior Trisha Tumlinson won three diving events as well. Against Cal, Tumlinson swept both diving events, and took the 1-meter against Stanford.
The final tallies against Cal were a 169-118 loss for the No. 15 men and a 185-110 loss for the No. 20 women. On Friday, at Stanford, both teams fared better, with the men losing 127-107 and the women falling 169.5-125.5.
Freshmen Christine Creek and junior Florencia Szigeti had big meets for the women as Creek swept the 100m and 200m breaststroke events against Cal, while Szigeti also earned two victories over the weekend.
Nick Brunelli led the charge throughout the weekend for the men. The senior swept the 100m and 200m freestyle events against Stanford and won the 200m against Cal.
Sophomore David Kolozar also recorded a victory in the 200m butterfly.
The Sun Devils will have the next two weekends off in preparation for their final regular season meet against UA on Feb. 14 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
