Students raising money to fight cancer

An ASU sophomore is fighting cancer one student, and one dollar at a time.

Mechanical engineering sophomore Steve Patterson is trying to raise thousands of dollars to fight cancer by joining a 5.5-mile walk up South Mountain in Phoenix.

The biggest hitch in his plans is the lack of student support.

Patterson is looking for students to sign up for the early registration deadline in order to assemble an official team.

To make the deadline, Patterson said he needs at least 10 people to sign up by Feb. 4.

If enough people do not register by the deadline, the American Cancer Society will not acknowledge the team as official, Patterson said.

The ultimate goal of the walk is to raise $5,000 with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Patterson said he hopes to rein in at least $1,000 by the Feb. 4 deadline with the help of volunteers, both native and non-native to ASU.

"We need to contribute in any way possible to help find the cure for cancer because it affects everyone -- our families, our friends and us," he said.

The walk will take place on Feb. 28.

"If we get several hundred people [to register], I'd be delighted," Patterson said. "The more the merrier."

The cost of early registration is $35 and includes a customized ASU team T-shirt.
