ASU East parking prices rise

Next fall, parking decals at ASU East will cost $15 more.

Terry Isaacson, the vice provost of administrative services and the appeals officer for Parking and Transit Services at ASU East, said the $60 fee has always been a temporary one.

"The parking rates were already established [by ASU] last year," Isaacson said. "We are continuing to improve lots, but we are waiting for the master plan before major changes are made."

ASU's new master plan, which will detail moves for some colleges and programs to different campuses, should be released in mid-April.

However, Isaacson said ASU East parking fees would remain the same for two years after the increase.

He added that money from decal sales funds improvements like signage, striping and visitor meters to be installed this summer.

Mary Dove, an operations management junior, and Penny Hom, a senior in the same program, only recently were told by the cashier's office that the current $60 fee will change to $75 for a standard green decal.

"It's outrageous," Hom said. She added that she'd rather see money go toward better causes such as "hiring new teachers and having more choices for classes," rather than improving the parking lots.

"However, a parking structure would be nice," Hom added. "I want to get out of here before it gets like main campus though." Hom is graduating in the fall.

Dove said she thought prices would go up no matter how students felt.

Dove said she liked the improvement that has been made with the parking lots, but "it seems fees are increasing every semester now."

Kent Markwart, who works for Cashiering Services at ASU East, said current decals expire Aug. 15. He said there have been some positive changes for parking.

"We still don't have the same pressures as main -- because there is no pressure to reserve spots," he said.

Markwart also said a new option this summer is that students can reserve decals on SunDial. Actual payments must still be made at the cashier's office.

The decals might cost more, but students who don't buy one will be paying more as well -- in parking tickets.
