Men's tennis drops fifth-straight match

Andy Colombo shows a little emotion after hitting the ball in a match against the University of Washington on Monday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

The woes continue for the No. 20 ASU men's tennis team.

The Sun Devils (4-5) dropped their second match in two days and fifth in a row, dropping the team's record under the .500 mark for the first time all season.

ASU kept it close but ultimately could not get past Washington, falling 4-2.

The Sun Devils had a chance to win the match at the end, as sophomore Ryan McBride and freshman Jonathan Kinsella were still alive with the team losing, 3-2.

However, Kinsella dropped a three-set match to Christoph Palmanshofer to give the Huskies the win.

The matchup against Washington was the seventh-straight time ASU faced a team ranked in the top 30 in the nation.

"Most of our schedule is top teams anyway, so we're used to playing hard teams every week," McBride said.

The battle against Washington finished up the ASU Quadrangle, which No. 5 TCU won by posting a 2-0 record. The Horned Frogs defeated No. 18 Pepperdine, 4-0, in Monday's other contest to claim the title.

Junior Andy Colombo won his first match of the season for ASU, defeating Daniel Chu, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Chris Biro was the other winner for the Sun Devils, downing Scott Felsenthal.

McBride, who was in the third set against Peter Scharler, was not able to finish his match, as once a team clinches the win, all other action stops.

"I like playing [Scharler]," McBride said. "I played him last year and beat him 6-1 in the third set for the decider, so I was hoping I would get the chance to do that again."

The Sun Devils resume play on Friday, as they head to USC to begin Pac-10 action. The Trojans defeated ASU, 6-1, on Feb. 21 in a match that did not count toward conference standings.
