Pipe bursts, floods language building

About two inches of water saturated the main lobby of the Language and Literature Building Tuesday after a pipe burst in a women's bathroom on the first floor.

Water flowed from the pipe for 10 or 15 minutes, enough time for it to seep into six classrooms on the first floor and drip down into two classrooms in the basement, said Marty Miller, Facilities Management technician.

Facilities Management received a call at about 1:45 p.m. that a pipe had broken, said building technician Rogelio Camarena. He was first on the scene to inspect the broken pipe.

"I felt like Indiana Jones," he said about fighting his way through the water, evident by the water spots coating his glasses.

"It just blew up," he said.

The water created too much pressure for the pipes, which were probably just old and ready to give out, Camarena said.

Psychology senior Daniel Stipp saw the water in time and was able to walk around to another entrance to get to his Spanish class.

"It's just annoying. It's right by the front door," he said. "Especially when you're in sandals on a 90-degree day. It's just nasty."

Undeclared freshman Mindy Winquist watched the incident unfold while she waited for her Spanish 101 exam.

"We felt bad for the people coming out," she said. "Some people slipped in it ... some people took their shoes off and stood in it."

Technicians were working to fix the pipe and post signs within an hour of the incident, which caused no injuries, Miller said.

Camarena said insurance would cover the cost of the damages.
