Rain and wind did not stop ASU East from holding the second annual Relay for Life and raising $15,000 to help fight cancer.

The relay is a team event where people walk around the ASU East track to raise money to fight cancer. The outside event was moved inside the Student Union and held all night Friday.

Anna Wales, chair for the Relay for Life event, said that almost 300 people, including 21 cancer survivors, attended the relay.

Even with the rain outside, "spirits were definitely not cloudy inside," said Wales, who helped put glow sticks in luminary bags all along the union halls and ballroom.

"That is one thing I have to say about ASU East campus people ... nothing gets them down," she added.

Wales described how 1-year-old cancer survivor, Kyndle Crawford, attended her first survivor event and shook up some moves on the dance floor.

Leah Rowe, an applied psychology senior and the entertainment coordinator for the event, said, "Everything went as planned minus the stuff that could only happen outside."

Helicopter rides were canceled, and the band, Affalacy, did not attend due to schedule changes that had to be made.

Rowe who attended until 3:30 am, said, "The most important things still happened though ... and the survivor ceremony was really moving."

Many ASU East participants want to continue their support to raise money and will attend the main campus Relay for Life event as well.

"Many of us decided to go to the main campus relay at Sun Angel stadium on the 16th and 17th to finish our fund-raising and walk."

Subway, Rosati's and Baci's delivered food to the Student Union and kept participants fed all night while the alternative band, "Smakhead" played for two hours. The event went on until 7 a.m. Saturday.
