They've done it again. The musical masterminds behind Hoodlums, the new and used record store embedded in the basement of the Memorial Union, will once again sponsor a free live performance by indie-punk pop artist Ben Kweller.
Kweller, who rocked the walls of Hoodlums a few years ago, remains one of only two artists to ever play inside the actual parameters of the music store.
For those of you who missed out on Phantom Planet and Michael Franti during the last two Hoodlums' presentations, get ready; Kweller's anti-folkadelic guitar riffs and energy combine for a "can't miss" concert.
With the failed attempts to bring recording artists to ASU's campus (think the Blaze's Method Man mishap and the SRC's punking of the PAB Punk Voter Concert), Hoodlums is the only organization that seems to regularly cash in on its promotion promises.
Kweller, also a member of the musical trifecta known as The Bens, will perform material from his ATO Records debut album, Sha-Sha. But as most Hoodlums concerts go, be prepared to expect the unexpected.
Steve Wiley, co-owner of Hoodlums Music says, "The free shows expose students to developing artists. The more music we bring in, the more excitement we can generate here on campus. We got an awesome reception with the Franti show and that gave us confidence to go after more shows."
Last Friday, Hoodlums brought in underground hip-hop duo Eyedea and Abilities for a free autograph session. The music shop provided free posters at the signing where hip-hop fans flocked to have the opportunity to meet the two.
This Friday, Hoodlums presents Ben Kweller live at noon in the basement lounge of the MU.
