ASU East: East hosts event to raise money

When a college campus shows love for education, it's not just for class schedules and bookstore sales.

On Saturday, ASU East's education program will be hosting the "Show Your Love for Education" event -- a variety of fundraising events that support education initiatives at ASU East.

This is the second year of the event, which includes a golf tournament, a 5-kilometer run/walk and a silent auction.

Organizers hope to raise funds for the Edward T. Hopper Memorial Fund, Project eXcellence and the ASU East Education Student Teacher Scholarship Fund.

Last year's event raised more than $10,000.

The first event of the day is the Walk 'n' Roll-a-Thon, which takes runners, joggers and walkers on a 5-kilometer tour of the east campus.

The walk begins at 10a.m. Prizes are awarded for those who collect the most money.

The afternoon will include a scramble-style golf tournament at the Arizona Golf Resort on Power Road in Mesa.

The Arizona Golf Resort is also hosting the evening's Recognition Dinner Dance and Silent Auction, where guests can enjoy a night of dinner and dancing from 6:30 p.m. until midnight. Individual tickets are $40 ($35 for a full-time ASU student), or a table of up to eight guests can be reserved for $280.

"I think a dinner is a great way to get people involved," said Sabrina Sirianni, a multimedia writing student. "Who doesn't love food?"

The Edward T. Hopper Memorial fund advances the use of technology in grades K-12. Project eXcellence aids children of migrant families and underserved schools to develop technology-based programs, and student teacher scholarship fund gives funds to ASU East education students during their student teaching semesters.
