ASU East: Graphics degree offered at East

Some of today's hottest jobs are rooted in one of ASU East's more unknown majors.

Graphic Information Technology bridges the gap between graphic communication and the world of information technology, offering graduates the possibility of a career in print, Web design, digital photography or other forms of multimedia.

GIT is a concentration within the Department of Information and Management Technology at ASU East. It is one of three concentrations offered that students may select from --the other two are Environmental Technology Management and Industrial Technology Management.

The GIT Club is one of the largest student organizations on East campus with 40 students.

From the beginning brainstorming to the final product, students develop visualization skills while being exposed to design technologies.

Students who are interested in the major but are unfamiliar with those technologies have nothing to worry about. The first of the prerequisite classes is GIT 135, Graphics Communications, which will review the technology available in the field.

The GIT Club gives students the opportunity to continually be exposed to the latest technology and industry trends.

The students are also given an opportunity to put their skills to use, said Angel Jimenez, vice president of the club.

"We do print and design jobs for nonprofit organizations, and for the school itself."

These projects also act as fundraisers for the club, allowing them to bring in guest speakers and award scholarships for students to visit various industry conferences.

According to Jimenez, the largest event held by the GIT Club each year is the Graphics and Art Show, which took place earlier this month.

Student submissions varied from Web site development to digital photography.

Other events are in the process of being planned, Jimenez said.

"The club is really open to do whatever the students want to do,"Jimenez said.
