East campus students now have a place of their own for health service.
The campus recently opened a new Student Health Center, offering east campus students health services provided directly through ASU.
Prior to the health center's opening, students were able to receive health services through the Carl T. Hayden Veteran's Administration Medical Center, which had a clinic on the campus.
The Student Health Center, located at 7153 E. Thistle Ave., will be open to all ASU students Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Appointments are recommended but not required.
The Student Health Center is managed by Bev McCoy, a nurse practitioner who has more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry.
In addition to McCoy, a medical assistant will be available, and a doctor will be on site one day a week.
Services offered at the new clinic include primary assessment and treatment of health problems and injuries, blood pressure screening, physical examinations, women's health, immunizations, laboratory tests, X-rays and a variety of health education and counseling.
McCoy said she hopes to incorporate overall wellness programs into the Student Health Center's services, including wellness and health assessment, as well as smoking cessation counseling.
Mario Zaragoza, a 21- year-old business management junior, isn't sure that he will use the center's services.
"I have benefits through work, so I probably won't use [the center]," he said. "I guess it would depend on how competitive the services are to the benefits my employer gives me."
One benefit of the Student Health Center is that students do not need to have insurance to receive care, though it is strongly encouraged.
