Letters to the Editor: STD awareness

Know the risks

One in four people has an STD, and there are one in four chances that you will be infected with an STD in your lifetime.

Any time I get around a group of people and the topic of STDs comes up, I find myself becoming quite offensive. Not just because I think people are naive (although most are), but my offensiveness comes out because I am infected with two STDs.

Truthfully, I did not sleep around, which is what most people tend to think about those infected with an STD.

As a matter of fact, I only slept with two people, and both of them were my boyfriends. The second ... I dated for almost two years, and he just decided that herpes and genital warts were not a big deal.

First, it is a big deal. Second, he did not have the respect to tell me that he was indeed infected.

I am just another victim who will have to deal with these diseases throughout my life because someone was so careless about his own actions. What bothers me the most is the fact that people who are active do not realize the chances of getting an STD. This is not the lottery, this is reality.

...Everybody should be aware of the causes and the risks of STDs. Don't be a victim of what I went through. Take precautions and do yourself and your partner a favor -- get tested.

Social Security forum vital to students

When President Bush and Republicans in Congress talk about "reforming" Social Security, they're not talking about changing the payments your parents will be getting -- they're talking about what Social Security will do for you and me, so listen up.

Your future may be on the line. You may be looking forward to a private account and maybe it will pan out for you. But it may not, and then where will you turn?

What happens when Wall Street fails you? George Bush's Social Security won't be there to help you anymore.

You may think you'll just opt out of private accounts in favor of regular benefits, but then you'll face Social Security payments cut by 40 percent because of the private account system.

This is not a choice of private accounts or the usual security -- this is sink or swim.

This Saturday at 9 a.m. you have an opportunity to hear what the alterative is to putting your retirement on the line with Bush's "reforms." Sens. Harry Reid, Richard J. Durbin and Byron L. Dorgan will be joining Arizona Congressmen Raul Grijalva and Ed Pastor at a Town Hall forum at the Phoenix Civic Plaza where your concerns about your future can be answered. Tickets are available by calling (602) 279-5263.

It's time to find out what your leaders are trying to do with your future, so educate yourself ... It's your future. Protect it.
