The ASU men's 4x100-meter relay team's thoughts of beating Louisiana State faded in 38.90 seconds Saturday night.
For the second consecutive week, LSU edged ASU in the men's 4x100m relay by the smallest of margins, this time in the Sun Angel Classic.
Last week, ASU finished second to LSU by two hundredths of a second at the Texas Relays. On Saturday, the margin was three hundredths of a second. LSU's time of 38.90 seconds was the fastest in the outdoor season.
"They didn't have their other guy, so we thought we'd get them," said ASU sophomore sprinter Domenik Peterson, referring to sophomore Xavier Carter, who missed the meet for a spring football scrimmage. "NCAAs will be the next time we see them, and it's not going down like this at all."
The Sun Devils posted five wins at Sun Angel Stadium and recorded 37 regional qualifying marks. Junior sprinter Lewis Banda competed in the 4x100m relay, but was limited because of a sore knee that has worsened since the Texas Relays.
Water polo
The ASU water polo team finished the weekend with an 8-6 win over Cal Baptist in the final match of the Beach Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
On Saturday, No. 16 ASU (9-16, 3-7 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) suffered a 9-8 loss to No. 2 USC, but gained some confidence for the Beach Tournament by giving the defending national champions a run for their money.
After an opening-round loss to No. 11 UC Irvine, ASU rebounded with a 6-3 victory over Santa Clara. The Sun Devils dropped a 9-3 decision against No. 18 Hartwick before beating No. 20 Cal Baptist.
