Boos & Bravos: Bogus immigration regulation and baseball

BRAVO to the ASU baseball team for making it all the way to the College World Series. We've said it over and over again, but you guys make us proud. Go Devils!

BOO to inane immigration regulations that allow children to be taken into the United States as helpless babies and raised there, and later threatened with the possibility of deportation. It isn't right that Luis Nava, a recent ASU alumnus, and three other students from Phoenix -- all of them outstanding science fair participants -- had to go through court proceedings because of something that wasn't their fault.

BRAVO to ASU officials for investigating ways that the shooting death of former ASU football player Brandon Falkner could have perhaps been averted. We hope the athletic department finds a way to make sure athletes' problems aren't kept in the family, and that players get the help they need from whatever department would best serve them.

BOO to Arizona's high crime rate. While we don't want to give this report more credit than it is due, we have to wonder: Who hasn't had their bike stolen before, or their house or car broken into? We're a growing border state that is prone to crime, and we need to keep our eyes open to fight it.

BRAVO to Sigma Phi Beta, a gay fraternity at ASU that is going to form a national organization. It's exciting to see this local group spread to other parts of the country, and we hope its members will increase awareness of all lifestyles, wherever it goes.

BOO to those who believe federal assistance for heating bills is OK, but federal assistance for cooling bills is not. Our summer heat is deadly, just like the snowstorms back east. People in Arizona are risking their lives because they're afraid they won't be able to pay their electric bill. But on that note...

BOO to summer heat. We don't like you, or the third-degree burns you give us when we touch a car-door handle. And it's been one of the deadliest summers on record for people without air conditioning, whether they are homeless or simply can't afford skyrocketing energy costs. You think you're so bad, summer heat? We would have liked to take this battle outside, if the monsoon hadn't beaten us to you.

BRAVO to the end of The State Press for the summer -- and to all the hardworking contributors and the faithful readers who pretended to be listening to professors when they were really reading our paper. We value your dedication. Now it's time for some rest and relaxation -- and margaritas to celebrate.
