Senior forward Liz Bogus was not going to let the ASU women's soccer team lose Friday evening against the University of California-Irvine.

The Sandy, Utah, native scored two crucial goals to give the Sun Devils a 3-2 victory over the visiting Anteaters.

With only four minutes left in the game, Bogus took control of the ball at the top of the box. After weaving through several UC Irvine defenders, Bogus was able to put the ball into the right side of the net.

"It was kind of a blur. I remember beating a couple players, and then I saw the shot," Bogus said. "I was just zoned out on that."

The game ended in the second overtime period when junior forward Lauren Niblett shot the ball from 25 yards out. The ball bounced off UC Irvine freshman goalkeeper Erin Henry's hands, and Bogus was there to put the ball into goal.

"I was running up, hoping that she would drop it, and she did," Bogus said. "I just happened to be able to follow up on it."

UC Irvine (1-3-0) scored first after junior midfielder Britney Webster put a corner kick into the back of the net after it bounced off several ASU players.

ASU (2-2-0) tied the game midway through the second half when freshman defender Emily Coelho found senior midfielder Brittany Cooper, who scored her second goal of the season.

With just over six minutes remaining in the game, UC Irvine freshman forward Megan Ortiz put her team ahead on an unassisted goal that went into the top left corner of the net.

That's when Bogus took over.

ASU had a chance to win at the end of the first overtime period when a foul was called on UC Irvine at the top of the box. Cooper shot the ensuing free kick, which hit the crossbar and bounced out.

"The free kick, of course, you're going to argue as a coach that it was in," women's soccer coach Ray Leone said afterward.

ASU's second game this weekend was at home against the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

The Sun Devils got on the board first when senior forward Haley Stein scored the first goal of her career. Senior midfielder Manya Makoski centered the ball on a corner kick, which Stein kicked into the net, giving ASU a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game.

UNLV (3-1-0) quickly tied up the game when sophomore forward Katie Carney scored an unassisted goal in the 25th minute of play.

The game remained tied until the 83rd minute of play. A foul was called against ASU on the sideline, and UNLV was awarded a free kick. However, the referee moved the ball 20 yards away from the sideline into the middle of the field. UNLV senior defender Nickie Olson took the free kick and bounced it into the goal, giving the Rebels a 2-1 advantage with only six minutes remaining.

"The only question was where the placement of the foul was. It happened on the sideline, and they moved it into the middle of the field and that's that," Leone said.

Unlike Friday night, the Sun Devils were unable to score in the waning minutes and lost 2-1.

ASU returns to action on Friday at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque against Syracuse.
