Students relocated to ASU from universities affected by Hurricane Katrina got the chance to meet with each other and learn about ASU at a special mini-orientation session Thursday.
The offices of Undergraduate Admissions and Student Affairs organized the orientation, which is similar to the Sun Devil 101 program offered to all incoming freshmen.
It offered students information about campus resources like tutoring and computer labs, and provided them with a network of support.
"This event is for students to connect one-on-one," said Laura Gladney, program coordinator for Undergraduate Admissions.
Erica Favela, who transferred to ASU from Loyola University in New Orleans Thursday, attended the special orientation session.
Favela said she ended up at ASU because her aunt and uncle in Arizona flew her out of Baton Rouge, where she and her family were evacuated.
"If it weren't for family, I wouldn't be here," she said.
While her parents are staying with friends in Louisiana, trying to clean up their home, Favela said she would be moving into a room in Palo Verde Main today.
"I was really fortunate," she said. "There is a really long waiting list for the dorms."
Favela said she was evacuated from Loyola the day after she moved into the residence halls there. She is not sure if she will return once the school reopens or if she will remain at ASU. It all depends on the circumstances surrounding her scholarships, she said.
Lou Ann Denny, from ASU's Registrar Office, said about 70 students from Louisiana have been registered at ASU so far.
