Letters to the Editor: Encouraging patriotism a form of brainwashing

Say 'no' to indoctrination

The article "Finding freedom under God" on Sept. 16, read, " ... by learning to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, children are exposed to patriotism and loyalty to their country. It incites a sense of belonging and knowledge of what America stands for."

Children are, indeed, vulnerable targets to the "brainwashing" effects of commercial marketing -- McDonalds, Oreos, Disney toys, blind patriotism and incomplete ideas about what America stands for.

Do we really need to brainwash our children with pledges every morning?
