Volunteers needed

The American Cancer Society, United Food Bank and Desert Botanical Gardens are just a few of the organizations on campus today that want ASU students for volunteer positions and internships.

The fourth annual Non-profit Volunteer and Internship Fair was organized by ASU's Community Service Program and American Humanics and features more than 60 non-profit organizations, said Katherine Fairbanks Sam, student involvement coordinator for the community service program.

"It's basically one-stop shopping for your volunteer needs," she said.

Organizations offering internships and volunteer opportunities at the fair include the Arizona Department of Health, Arizona Humane Society, Salvation Army, United Way, Mesa Fire Department and the Special Olympics, Sam said.

Fiona Peterelli, programming assistant for the community service program, said ASU students are also playing a huge part in the fair by hosting tables for their student organizations.

"It is a great demonstration of ASU students' commitment to service, as well as community need," she said.

Graduate student Mike Devenny, chair of Camp Sparky, said his organization would staff a table at the non-profit fair.

Camp Sparky is an ASU organization that provides teaching assistance to underprivileged schools.

"We look at it as an opportunity to not only recruit new members but to educate students about our mission," Devenny said.

Sam said this year's fair would host twice as many organizations as last year's fair.

"It's bigger and better than ever," she said.

She said these organizations are in a great need of service.

"I think a lot of non-profits get overlooked," she said. "They really rely on ASU students to help make their agencies a better place."
