A "sudden cardiac event" likely caused the death of an ASU student at the Student Recreation Complex in January, but the official cause of death remains unknown.
Benjamin Maggos, 24, collapsed after stepping off a treadmill on Jan. 28, according to the autopsy report released Wednesday by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office.
Maggos was a graduate student in the Arts, Media and Engineering Program.
"It is highly likely that [Maggos] had a sudden cardiac event, possibly exacerbated by dehydration and heavy exercise," Dr. Rebecca Hsu, a medical examiner, wrote in the report.
Emergency medical personnel at the scene found Maggos had a rapid heart rate, and some witnesses reportedly said he was wheezing.
The autopsy found congestion and an accumulation of fluid in Maggos' lungs.
Maggos was a regular at the SRC and was described by his roommate as a "health nut" who did not use drugs, alcohol or steroids, officials said.
The autopsy noted inflammation of the liver and a jaundiced appearance, which were possibly caused by a viral infection or a reaction to drugs.
A test for viruses came back negative, but the report said the post-mortem testing has limited value.
Hsu said the death was likely natural but could not rule out a reaction to a toxin or drug.
