Devil Dish: Fever Pitch

Down 2-0 in its American League Division Series, the defending champs and their fans hope that they have another comeback in them.

I'm sorry to dampen your spirits and rain on your parade, but the Boston Red Sox are done. There will be no miraculous comebacks this season. The boys from Bean Town used up all of their luck coming back from a 3-0 deficit against the Yankees in the American League Championship Series last year.

It's been a good run, the Red Sox simply do not have the pitching to mount another comeback. Chicago has won too many games this season to turn around and fold.

The White Sox pitching is too good to lose three straight, and Boston's pitching staff is too battered.

Yes, it's not over until it is over. Yes, the Red Sox might very well win today and force a game four. They might also force a game five, but they cannot undo the inevitable. The White Sox will win this series.

Last year the Red Sox seemed to be the team of destiny. This year that title seems to have shifted to the boys from Chicago, who are aiming to end their own streak.

It was fun while it lasted, but "Fever Pitch" has changed sox.
