New student regent wanted

Students interested in becoming a voice for Arizona university students have the opportunity to apply to be the new student regent for the Arizona Board of Regents.

Upon the resignation of ASU Student Regent Kolby Granville at the ABOR meeting in September, a student regent selection committee was formed to collect applications and choose three nominees for his replacement.

Specific duties of student regents include helping set tuition, allocating university budgets, setting admission standards and serving as the voice for more than 105,000 students in the state university system.

Applications are due Monday at 5 p.m. to the Associated Students of ASU office on the third floor of the Memorial Union.

"We're doing all this to guarantee a voice on the Arizona Board of Regents that would be very aggressive and competent in carrying out objectives and goals," said Undergraduate Student Government President Yaser Alamoodi, a member of the committee.

Applications should include a copy of the applicant's unofficial transcripts, a recommendation letter, three references, a resume and a personal essay on why he or she is the best student for the job.

The student regent selection committee will choose three candidates to forward to the governor's office to interview for the position.

Alamoodi said the committee will select the three candidates by the middle of next week. The interviews could be as soon as Oct. 22.

Two student regents, representing all three Arizona universities, serve on the board for two-year staggered terms, according to the ABOR Web site. The student regent position rotates between the three in-state universities.

The committee is looking for three qualities in student regent candidates: qualifications for the job, raw passion and a commitment to the best interest of the student body, Alamoodi said.

"We are looking for somebody who does not shy away from aggressively addressing issues that might be a concern for the students," he said.

Granville left the board to work on a project that would give students living on campus the opportunity to request early ballots for state and local elections.

Granville and others working on the project would have students fill out early ballot requests when they move into residence halls, hold on to the early ballot requests until election time and send them in as a group.

Despite his abrupt resignation during the first year of his term, regents on the board were supportive of Granville's decision.

Regent President Christina Palacios said, "It was his choice, and we wish him well."
