Daphne Loves Derby, a fresh-off-the-boat indie-rock band, owes its success to the Internet. This band has recently started to emerge from its rain-drenched hometown of Kent, Wash., by posting tunes online, leading the trio to a broad fan base.
After receiving great response from Kent area locals, the three amigos: Jason Call, Kenny Choi and Stu Clay put their finished demos on Web sites such as PureVolume.com and MySpace.com. After more than 1 million song downloads, the band was finally able to get their music to fans across the country.
But Call and Clay were still in junior high, and Choi was in high school. With school to consider, the band's tour schedule consisted of only weekend gigs. Mind you, Daphne Loves Derby gained success nationally without ever having a radio hit or record label supporting its gorgeous melodies.
And with success comes opportunity, and Daphne Loves Derby received a generous amount of label interest. In the end Daphne Loves Derby inked with the Denver-based Outlook Music. Daphne Loves Derby may be primed for success with its new record label. We will find out if their show lives up to the hype, though.
The Washington trio is often compared to bands like Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie, and is scheduled to perform at ASU's Memorial Union TV lounge (in the basement) today at noon. The show is free.
So if indie-rock bands make you want to move, Daphne Loves Derby will most definitely rock your socks off.
