Baseball: ASU swamps Baylor

While it may have been raining hard enough in Waco, Texas on Friday night to postpone ASU's game with Baylor, once Saturday afternoon rolled around the Sun Devils poured down on the hapless Bears.

Led by sophomore outfielder J.J. Sferra, ASU (10-5) jumped to a 7-0 lead through four and a half innings.

Sferra went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and scored a run in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader (which was prompted by Friday's rainout).

Freshman Ike Davis started on the hill, striking out five in 4 1/3 innings, before being replaced by junior Pat Bresnehan in the fifth. Coming in with the bases loaded, Bresnehan walked the only three batters he faced, bringing Baylor (6-2) to within four runs.

Brett Bordes came in and threw two pitches before inducing a double play to end the threat. Bordes then pitched until the ninth, when junior Zechry Zinicola came in for the final three outs, ending the game with a final score of 9-5.

In game two of the twin bill, Davis did his damage with the bat, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs as the Sun Devils continued their offensive onslaught. Despite stranding 14 runners, ASU scored 11 runs in the game en route to an 11-3 victory.

Sophomore Ryan Sontag was also hot at the plate, knocking in three runs while scoring three of his own.

On the mound, freshman pitcher Jeff Urlaub pitched brilliantly in his second career start, going seven strong innings and striking out six while only giving up two earned runs.

After being outscored 20-8 on Saturday, Baylor had a different script in mind on Sunday.

The Bears took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run single by junior Chase Gerdes in the second off junior Matt Trink. ASU crawled ahead in the seventh off an RBI single by junior Colin Curtis, briefly bringing the score to 3-2.

After the seventh inning stretch, Baylor came out and scored three times, taking the lead for good.

Junior closer Jeff Mandel finished the game for the Bears and ended the Sun Devils five game-winning streak.
