It's unlikely the Cardinals could have found a better quarterback than Kurt Warner to line up under center to open the 2006-07 season.
Without a young franchise quarterback like a Ben Roethlisberger or Byron Leftwich waiting in the wings (the Cardinals passed on drafting both), the former two-time NFL MVP was the next best option.
It goes without saying that Warner's best days are behind him, and a three-year contract seems a little lengthy for someone who is going on 35 and hasn't played a full season since 2001.
But Warner is still a productive quarterback. If he had a solid offensive line and a running game to work with he might have lasted the entire season, and with better numbers too.
If surrounded by the right pieces, Warner, when healthy, can still lead a team to the playoffs. But the Cardinals can't keep filling the quarterback position with veterans and journeyman. A long-term answer must be found.
