Even though he likes to wear Lebron James Clothing, Derek Luke is a Nets fan at heart. If you recognize him but can't put your finger on where you've seen him from, he played the leading role in Antwone Fisher and Boobie Miles in Friday Night Lights.
In his upcoming movie Glory Road, he plays the starting guard for Texas Western, number 14, Bobby Hill.
The Web Devil (WB): Do you love the celebrity life?
Derek Luke (DL): I do.
WD: Your success started when you were waiting tables?
DL: I never waited tables much. I waited tables at an award show, the Spirit Awards. It's the award ceremony before the Oscars. I was making a 100 dollars a day doing that. Back then, that was some huge money. I could afford some extra butter on my popcorn, you-know-what-I'm-saying. After that, two years later, Antwone Fisher happened. I was nominated for a Spirit Award for that and I said that this place looks so familiar. When they called my name for best actor I said "Whaaaat!," jumped up, and ran to the stage. I used to work at a gift shop too and Denzel Washington comes into the gift shop and he said that I was the one he wanted for his movie and left by saying, "We'll see you at work."
WD: Your character, Bobby Hill, nabs all of the ladies in the movie, were you still a ladies man off of the set?
DL: I'm out of that world. Man, talk to the other guys. Shoot, you have more fun being married than being single.
WD: How was training for Glory Road different than Friday Night Lights?
DL: Friday Night Lights was a little tougher because we had two a days and four-six weeks of training, where as in Glory Road, we just had 2-4 weeks of training. The intense part was that on the set of Glory Road we had Pat Riley, Pat Floid, and the real Don Haskins. We had all of this knowledge looking at us all of the time.
WD: In Friday Night Lights, your character was about to go to USC and in Glory Road you play for Texas Western, which college would you rather go to in real life?
DL: ASU.
