Journalism class' site nominated for Webby

Some students could have an interesting blurb for their resumes after a project completed by one of ASU's journalism classes was nominated for a prestigious online award.

The Devil's Tale, the fall 2005 edition of the Cronkite Zine, is a finalist in the student category for the 10th Annual Webby Awards, the "online version of the Oscars," according to the Webby Web site.

The magazine is published once a semester as part of assistant professor Carol Schwalbe's online media class.

The Webby Awards had more than 5,500 entries in 65 categories.

Schwalbe said she was excited the magazine made the cut.

The credit goes to more than just that one class, though, Schwalbe added.

"The stories are written, shot, filmed and taped by Cronkite students in various classes," she said. Her students take the submissions and assemble the magazine as part of their final project for JMC 425.

Nancie Dodge, a journalism student, works with Schwalbe to make it all actually happen.

"[Winning] would be so cool," she said. "I don't think we've gotten one any place in the University. And frankly, we deserve it. We're really good."

Online voting is open from now until May 5, and winners will be announced May 9. Those wishing to weigh in should visit www.webbyawards.com.

Winning the award would also draw some interest in the Cronkite School, Dodge said.

"I think it would bring attention to us," she said. "We only have one class, but we kick ass when it comes to awards."
