If you'd prefer your laughs live instead of on TV, The Originals improvisational comedy troupe is sure to knock your socks off.
The Originals travels throughout Phoenix and performs in some of the Valley's most well-known comedy clubs. Cast members include former and current ASU students as well as Arizona residents who have a knack for improvisational acting.
Improvisational acting requires much discipline because it's completely unscripted. Actors go on stage and perform off-the-cuff skits and jokes based on audience prompts.
Cast member Jennifer Rubins, who is also the recruitment and retention specialist for ASU's College of Education, says that rehersals help the cast become more spontaneous.
"Our muscles are flexed to do pretty much anything," Rubins says.
Without rehearsals, cast members wouldn't know what to do next. Rehearsals ensure performances run smoothly.
"We're like a sports team," Rubins says. "We know how to play the game, but the way the game is played changes each time."
Founder and director Matt Rosin describes The Originals as "machine gun comedy."
