To those who say the ASU football team's season is doomed based on a lackluster performance against Division I-AA Big Sky NAU - enough already.

Despite all the drama surrounding the Sun Devils in recent weeks, there is no story-behind-the-story regarding how they played against the Lumberjacks. Thursday's season opener was just a case of ASU playing a bad game, period.

Play a bad game against Division I-AA Big Sky, and the Sun Devils should win by about three touchdowns. Play a good game against Division I-AA Big Sky, and they should win by 40 or more points.

If ASU plays a good game against a Pac-10 team, it should win by a couple scores. And if it plays a bad game against a Pac-10 team, it'll lose.

The key to ASU's season is making sure it beats the teams it should beat. Then if the team can pull off an upset or two, it'll be a banner year. Wouldn't you rather the Sun Devils get a bad performance out of their system against Division I-AA Big Sky?
