Sun Devil Stadium featured Minnesota and Texas Tech in a barn-burner that will not be soon forgotten.
The 44-41 Texas Tech victory had a little bit of everything: broken records, game-changing turnovers, and a 31-point comeback capped by a 52-yard field goal.
In overtime Minnesota kicked a field goal but it could not stave off Texas Tech as sophomore running back Shannon Woods scampered in on a 3-yard TD.
The score not only marked an incredible win for the Red Raiders, but also broke the bowl comeback record previously set at 30.
After halftime Minnesota seemed to have the game in hand. They had just added to their already sizable lead, to make the score 38-3, and showed no signs of slowing down.
Then all hell broke loose.
With 5:00 remaining in the third quarter, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell threw a 43-yard TD to wide receiver Joel Filani.
On the very first play in the fourth, Harrell tossed another TD and after Minnesota turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, the Red Raiders never looked back.
They scored each and every time they had the ball, scoring 24 unanswered points.
"We're an offense that can score in a hurry, and everyone knows that," Harrell stated. "Everyone felt like, 'Hey, we're going to win.'"
With 5 seconds remaining Texas Tech kicker Alex Trlica kicked a 52-yard field goal to tie the score at 38 which ultimately led to the Texas Tech victory.
Sun Devil Stadium had previously been home to the Fiesta Bowl since its inception in 1971. The Fiesta Bowl has since moved on to the new University of Phoenix Stadium.
This is the first year that Sun Devil Stadium has held the Insight Bowl. Its previous venues were at Arizona Stadium and Bank One Ballpark.
