A student group's biweekly meeting will be a catalyst for a constitution on the Downtown campus, said Matthew Besenfelder, public programs representative.
According to Besenfelder, the Student Government Advisory Board (SGAB) wants to construct a constitution before the semester runs out.
Besenfelder said the process of writing a constitution will occur from the ground up.
"There's not many times where that actually happens," he said.
The organization will need to overcome the gap between campuses as a majority of students commute over living on campus. This gap will pose potential problems, Besenfelder said.
Shelley Fassett, SGAB chair and graduate student, said students should take notice because the process of writing up a student government document is about the students themselves.
"We may be known as the student government, but our first job is to be leaders and advocates for our fellow students," Fassett said. "If we don't know what they want, than how can we advocate for it?"
SAGB was started in November 2005 with a couple of students as a way for students to offer opinions for the Downtown campus.
The SAGB has served as a voice in forums like tuition hearings, Fassett said.
The group serves as a liaison among several subcommittees, which are each representative of colleges like the nursing and public programs.
Besenfelder said additional hopes from the organization include the need to proliferate students' awareness about the SGAB, all of which will also be discussed among the seven members.
Among the efforts to propagate the SGAB's agenda, SGAB took students to a Phoenix Sun's game in hopes of achieving more notoriety around campus.
Besenfelder also said the SGAB wants to have an election for student government by the spring semester of 2008.
SGAB is slated for a retreat this weekend where these topics will be further developed and discussed among the group members.
Fassett said she thinks SAGB will succeed because of the help of campus leadership.
Meetings are every other Monday at 7 p.m. in the Residential Commons Plaza Room.
